Highways connecting Amman to Petra

There are 3 major highways that connect Amman to Petra.

The Desert Highway

The desert highway, also known as Highway 15, runs in Jordan south to north. It is one of the most economical and fastest options to travel. As the name indicates, this highway runs through the desert. Although the condition of the road is excellent, there isn’t much to see or do along the route. The journey through the desert highway takes approximately 3 hours and covers almost 140 miles. It is the only highway that has direct transport from Amman to Petra. This highway is best for travelers who have limited time and budget.

The King’s Highway

It is a 280-kilometre highway and is known for its exceptional landscapes, with mountains, valleys, and canyons. It is the slowest option and requires five hours of driving. The King’s Highway ranged from Madaba to Petra and covers many sightseeing spots on the way. This is the best option for travelers who are fond of history and nature. A journey through the Kings Highway may take a full day or more as there is no direct transport; buses are needed to be changed.

There is a minivan that departs from Amman’s Southern bus station to Kerak. In Kerak, there is bus that departs at 1 PM and goes to Tafilah. From Tafilah’s south transport station, there are buses to Ma’an that are really a reroute from the Kings Highway. From Ma’an, you can take a taxi or to Wadi Musa. From Wadi Mosa, the bus will take you to Petra.

Another choice that does permit you to travel the Kings Highwayin a single day is the traveler transport that departs from the Mariam hotel situated in Madaba. This bus runs from Madaba to Petra and stops at the Wadi Mujib viewpoint and Kerak castle. It only cost 54 JD per person.

The Dead Sea Highway

The Dead Sea Highway, also known as Highway 65, runs north-south in Jordan, starting near Irbid in the north, passing through the Jordan Valley and along the Dead Sea, and ending in Aqaba. This highway requires 4 hours and approximately 150 miles to reach the destination.

Travel options: from Amman to Petra

Travelling by bus

Travellers can travel from Amman to Petra by bus. There are two buses available for the trip, which run at two different times. One is the JETT bus, which departs from Amman at 6:30 am and reaches Petra at 10:30 am. The journey is about four hours without any stops in between. It is a scheduled air-conditioned bus. Its ticket can also be booked priorly at the JETT bus station situated in Amman.It is one of the fastest and most comfortable options. The price of the ticket is 11 JD. Second option is the local bus that runs from 9 to 4 am. The bus driver doesn’t depart until the whole bus is full with passengers. These are minibuses and are less comfortable as compared to JETT buses. The cheapest option is to take a minivan from Amman’s southern bus station, the Wihdat bus station, or the Mujama Janobi station. The ticket cost is 5 JD.

Travelling by car

Renting a car gives you the maximum amount of freedom to discover and explore Jordan the way you want. With a rented car, you can easily plan some longer stays. There are many car rental companies at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. Travelling from Amman to Petra by car takes three hours. The travellers are expected to pay 25– 30 JD per day for an air-conditioned car with insurance. Travellers could take either the King’s Highway or the Dead Sea Highway.

Travelling by taxi with a driver

Travelling from Amman to Petra by taxi with a driver is an expensive option. The cost would be around 70-90 JD, which varies depending on your negotiation skills.

When to travel

Jordan is a perennial destination, but the recommended time to visit is from March to May or from September to November, as in these months the temperature is moderate and the weather is enjoyable for recreational ventures. In the summer season (June to August), the temperature reaches up to 40°C , and the heat can be very intense. However, it is advised to avoid the midday sun and stay hydrated. In the winter season (December to February), the temperature can drop below freezing, and there may be occasional rainfall from time to time. While the winter season is not as famous as the spring and autumn seasons, it can be a good time to visit if you enjoy cooler weather and fewer people.
