Many tour companies offer trips according to your choice of day or days from Amman to Petra and often include stops at other interesting sites like Madaba, Mount Nebo, and the Dead Sea.

What to See in Petra

As we know that Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the New Seven Wonders of the World and also was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and is famous for its buildings carved into the rock.

Main Attractions in Amman to Petra:

  1. The Siq: is a deep narrow valley that is about 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) long. It is the main entrance to Petra by walking through the valley is an exciting experience because the tall cliffs make the path feel magical.

2. The Treasury (Al-Khazneh): At Siq’s end you will see the Treasury which is Petra’s most famous building beautifully carved into the rock.

3. The Street of Facades: has many tombs and houses carved into the rock which shows the amazing skills of the Nabataeans.

  1. The Theatre: which hold more than 4,000 people though it is ancient but it was carved into the mountainside and gives a glimpse into the entertainment of the past.

5. The Monastery (Ad Deir): By climbing 800 steps you will reach the Monastery but the view and the building are worth the effort. The Monastery is another stunning rock-cut structure with great panoramic views.

6. The Royal Tombs: As the name indicates that these tombs are larger and more decorative than other tombs in Petra. The Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, and Corinthian Tomb are especially impressive.

Tips for Visiting Amman to Petra

  1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: Petra is a big site, and you will do a lot of walking so buy good shoes to make your feet feel comfortable.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially in the summer. There are cafes and vendors inside Petra, but it’s best to be prepared.
  3. Start Early: Start your trip in Petra as early as possible to avoid crowds and heat. The site opens at 6:00 AM.
  4. Hire a Guide: It’s very good to hire a guide which can tell you in detail the stories and facts that you might miss on your own.
  5. Stay Overnight: Try to spend at least one night in Wadi Musa, the town next to Petra. This gives you more time to explore and enjoy Petra by Night, a special event where the Treasury is lit by candles.

Practical Information

  1. Tickets: The tickets can be bought at the entrance of Petra. There are options for one, two, or three days. A one-day ticket costs around 50 Jordanian Dinars (about 70 USD).
  2. Opening Hours: Petra is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the summer and until 4:00 PM in the winter.
  3. Weather: The best times to visit are in the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is mild. Summers can be very hot, and winters can be cold, especially at night.

Experience Beyond Petra

If you have extra time, there are other interesting places to visit near amman to Petra:
